More Music @ The Moore is a high-point in our year - local teens representing diverse musical styles get together and perform at The Moore Theatre for one evening only, leaving everyone pretty much speechless - this year, everything from pop to Irish fiddle to string ensemble will be represented. Our Paramount Club Manager and extraordinary vocalist Tory Wimer-Contreras is mentoring the brother/sister duo of Virginia and Evan Easthope - here's what she has to say about the process:
Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Virginia and Evan Easthope at their parents' beautiful home on Capitol Hill. Aside from their dog eating all of the pita that Margaret had set out for us, the session went great. Having grown up singing with my sister, I have a true appreciation for that sibling vocal blend. It is something that just cannot be duplicated and the Easthopes have it.
As the Easthopes performed countless tunes for me, it became abundantly clear that these two have a bond that is made of steel. Not only are they extremely talented musicians, vocalists, songwriters but their chemistry together is seriously contagious and endearing. No sibling rivalry here, these two are supportive and extremely encouraging of one another. And talk about songwriters, wow. Their lyrics are charming, funny and thought-provoking. I can't wait to hear what they are writing in 10 years or even now as i type.
Individually, they are very unique. Evan gets in this zone when he plays and sings and you can feel his emotion in each strum of the guitar. He holds just enough back from the audience that you feel he may have a secret lurking which draws you in further. His raspy vocals are such a nice contrast with Virginia's pure, sweet melodies. Virginia has a voice like honey with a touch of soul. Just when she's about to finish a phrase, she adds a bit of grit, making her vocals sophisticated and effortless. Together, the contrast between Virginia and Evan is very intriguing.
All and all, the session was productive and a lot of fun too. We shared some great laughs and I was happy to help them find a harmony for the chorus of "The Checklist", help them decide on the songs they will perform, and give them some performance pointers. Great talent and passion can't necessarily be taught and doesn't need a lot of coaching, just a bit of guidance.
